The City of Westby is turning 100!

The History Alive Project (HAP) is throwing a birthday party for Westby.

The centennial celebration will include a series of educational, family-oriented events, culminating with an all-city celebration on August 22nd to mark the 100th anniversary of the City's official status as a city which took place on August 20, 1920.

The centennial is a great opportunity for residents to take some pride in their city. The History Alive Project (HAP) wants to involve residents of all ages in the celebration.

Schedule of Events 

Wednesday, August 12th  - Friday, August 21st - Centennial Rocks Hunt

Saturday August 22, 2020

10 am - 11 am - Centennial Celebration Kick Off at Seas Branch School Yard area 122 Nelson Street, Westby

11 am - 4:30 pm - Decades of Homes Tour 

12 pm - 4:30 pm -  Events & Celebrations at the History Alive Project House, 218 North Main Street, Westby

2 pm - Rock Hunt Winners Announced at the History Alive Project House, 218 North Main Street, Westby

4 pm - 2020 Syttende Mai Button Raffle at the History Alive Project House, 218 North Main Street, Westby

- Centennial Rocks Hunt - 

Wednesday, August 12th - Friday, August 21st at 4pm

 

  • 100 rocks will be hidden within the City limits of Westby starting August 12 and ending August 14

  • Rocks will not be buried or located more than 6 feet above ground

  • Rocks will only be hidden on public property

  • Once a Rock has been found, bring it to the Westby City Hall office between 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday; City Hall staff will write down finder contact information 

  • Rock may be kept by finder

  • Finder can turn in more than one found Rock per person
    ALL ROCKS FOUND MUST BE TURNED IN TO CITY HALL NO LATER THAN 4 p.m. AUGUST 21 TO BE INCLUDED IN THE DRAWING.

 

  • Prized winners will be drawn Saturday, August 22, at the History Alive Project House at 2 p.m. 

  • Finder need not be present to win

  • Prizes handed out at the time of the winners announcement

  • Prizes: gift cards of $15, $10, and $5 to local Westby businesses. Please note:  if the "Big Birthday Logo Rock" is found, winner will automatically win $20 cash presented on August 22 at the HAP House

- 1st Annual “Decades of Homes” Tour -

Wednesday, August 19th - Sunday August 23rd

This is a self drive by / walk by tour. There is no entry to the interior of any of the houses.

Join us in our 1st Annual "Decades of Homes Tour" We will be showcasing 12 homes in the City of Westby. Each home will be marked with a sign and number. A map of the tour can be found here and also at the Centennial Kick off Celebration and at the History Alive Project House.

Homes Tour

HOUSE # 6:  Built in 1915 by Bekkedal Lumber employee, Mr. Johnson, who wanted to use the California plan, against Bekkedal’s advice. House is cross-shaped with most rooms having 3 outside walls. House contains 67 windows and all but 7 are casement with leaded (zinc) glass. In 1928, the Westby Coon Prairie Ladies Circles purchased the home for $6000. 

- Centennial Kick Off - 

Saturday, August 22nd 10am - 11am

Seas Branches School Yard, 122 Nelson Street, Westby

The Kick off ceremony will include an introduction of the HAP Birthday Party Committtee, guests, a presentation of Commemorative flags and plaque. We will also be planting a Centennial Tree and kicking off an afternoon of Celebrating all things Westby! Beverages and Birthday Cake Pops will be served.

Please bring your own lawn chair or blanket.

- Centennial Celebration -

History Alive Project House, 218 North Main Street, Westby

Join us for an afternoon of events and celebrations! Take a self guided tour of historic photos of the Westby throughout the decades, enjoy kids activities, add your thoughts to the time capsule and enjoy refreshments and cake pops. We will have maps of the 1st Annual Decade of Homes Tour and will drawing the winners of the Centennial Rocks Hunt (2 pm) and the Syttende Mai Button Raffle (4 pm).

* Social Distancing will be observed and masks are highly encouraged* 

*Second floor of the History Alive Project House is not handicapped accessible*

-Westby Centennial Time Capsule -  

Saturday, August 22nd

Time Capsule box will be available at the Centennial Kick off Celebration from 10am- 11am and will continue from 12 - 4pm at the History Alive Project House at 218 North Main Street, Westby and will move to WCCU Lobby on Monday 24th through September. ​The time Capsule box will be stored in the vault located at the Westby City Hall to be opened in 50 years from now, 2070!

Visit the time capsule and write a message to share with 2070!

  • Writing materials will be available:  optional idea forms will be available for all age levels to fill out.
